Project Jason is pleased to announce the opening of Healing Harbor.
Healing Harbor is a free service provided to families of the missing by nonprofit organization Project Jason and Duane Bowers, LPC.
Families of the missing suffer a unique tragedy, one with which many professional counselors do not have the training or experience to be able to properly service their clients. In addition, many families do not have the financial means to seek professional counseling. Duane is one of the nation’s most qualified counselors in regards to issues faced by these families, and we are honored to have him with us to answer your questions.
Healing Harbor can provide answers and assistance on a variety of emotional issues that effect family members of missing persons. This assistance may provide the boost needed for that family member to deal with and adapt to the situation without seeking counseling. (Please keep in mind that Healing Harbor should not be viewed as a substitute for individual, private counseling if needed.)
Families of the missing who elect to participate in Healing Harbor are invited to post their question to Duane in our private forum area. These questions may cover any topic of interest in respect to emotional issues that relate to having a missing person in their life.
If you are a family member of a missing person, and would like to take advantage of this service, please register at our forum, located at http://www.projectjason.org/dpforum/forum.php

We need your help with a grass roots effort to get this Bill introduced.
I am attaching a Bill (with sample letter) that we are trying to get
introduced into Congress. Myself and many others with abducted children
directly participated in some of the language
contained within this Bill. Larry Synclair was the principle author, you
can see more about Larry here or Google search his name:
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2005/12/prweb323610.htm
http://www.crnjapan.com/foreign_law/usa/en/synclaircannonact.html
This is a quote from Larry:
“So far Feinstein’s office has been the most cooperative to the PARENT Act.
Her assistant, Amir Stepak, told me to gather some support such as from
child protection organizations and other agencies to help the Senator out.
Undoubtedly, getting letters from everyone to the Senator will get help
the PARENT Act to first base as well.”
“Nevertheless, it wouldn’t hurt getting a letter out by you and/or your
relatives to Senator Feinstein. Send or fax it to her assistant Amir Stepak
and tell him you (and relatives) were aware that the PARENT Act needed some
support.”
I would recommend faxing out a letter directly to Feinstein’s office and to
your Senators and Representative requesting that they write a letter on your
behalf addressed to Feinstein supporting the Bill and request that Feinstein
sponsor the Bill. This should be done as soon as possible. F.Y.I. Faxing
is preferred the mail is too slow, because it takes too long to clear
security.
Please pass this along to everyone you know…..
Thank you,
Brett Weed

Dear Senator Feinstein:
I am a ________ of ___ abducted children being held in _____. After years of the federal government failing to do anything to take appropriate action, I am respectfully asking you to sponsor the proposed legislation known the PARENT Act (Parental Abduction Recovery Education and Network Training Act).
I’ve spoken to many parents who were ignored by the U.S. State Department’s Office of Children's Issues and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS). It is horrible to see these two offices handle international child abduction cases with such incompetence. There must be a better way for the federal government to stop this crime that affects tens of thousands of American children each year.
The PARENT Act would transfer the responsibilities and funding regarding international child abduction prevention from Office of Children's Issues to a new office in the U.S. Justice Department’s Criminal Division called the Child Abduction, Recovery and Education section. This proposed unit would focus only on interstate and international child abduction cases because the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section has no one in their office with any experience to stop this crime that’s recognized as a federal violation under 18 USC §1204 or the International Parental Kidnapping Crime Act (IPKCA). I was recently informed that a senior official from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children stated, “CEOS does not have anyone assigned to handle IPKCA cases, which makes IPKCA matters even more difficult.”
Will you please sponsor this legislation so American children will not become victims to parental abduction and left-behind parents can possible reunite with their kids that disappeared years ago.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,

Contributions to the food bank
News Release
Durham Police Department
For Immediate Release July 27, 2007
Victim Services/HOIST Unit Holds Summer Food Drive
Public Reminded that ‘Hunger Has No Vacation’
The Victim Services/HOIST Unit of the Durham Police Department (DPD) is sponsoring its first
summer food drive to support the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC in Durham. July 1 through
August 1, 2007 citizens are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or make monetary
contributions to the food bank to meet summer demands.
“This collaboration with Durham police will help us to meet a critical need this time of year that many
people are not aware of, “says Julie Lawhorn, Outreach Coordinator of the Food Bank. “For
example, children on summer vacation who normally would eat one or more meals at school are
now at home during the day or at grandma’s. This can put extra strain on a family’s budget. “
The Food Bank services all residents of Durham and counties in the Central and Eastern Food Bank
network. This includes working parents, school students, natural disaster victims, and local shelters
serviced by the Durham facility. “As crime victims are also referred to the food bank when there is an
urgent need for assistance, Victim Services staff took on the outreach project that will mutually
benefit the department and the food bank, “says Lukas Strout of Victim Services/HOIST.
Additional partners include the employees at Duke University Police Department , NBC 17, Carolina Friends School (summer camp), Urban Echoes, Lakewood YMCA (summer camp), the Durham Division of Community Corrections and the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Wilmington, NC and Colony Tire, Triangle Jazz Society.
The Food Bank locations in Raleigh, Durham and Wilmington are all accepting donations c/o the Durham/Duke PD Summer Food Drive. The 2007 NC Food Drive will run from July 1 to August 1, 2007.
Drop off locations in Durham for non-perishable food items include:
Food Bank, 708 Gilbert Street
Durham Police Headquarters, 505 W. Chapel Hill Street
District 2 Substation, Back of Northgate Mall, 1056 W Club Blvd.
Durham Center, 501 Willard Street
BB&T-Main Branch, 505 S. Duke Street
City of Durham Fleet Maintenance Department, 1900 Camden Avenue
El Centro Hispano, 201 West Main Street
In Chapel Hill, Performance Auto, 1810 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. (15/501), is also
accepting donations.
The most needed items are: peanut butter, canned meals (stews, soups, tuna, fruit and vegetables), rice, cereal, paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc.), hygiene items (toothpaste, shaving items, soap, etc), diapers, elderly nutrition drinks (ensure) and instant formula. Loose glass and plastic jars of baby food are not accepted because of health regulations.
At the Food Bank drop-off location, givers are asked to mention that donations are part of the
Durham Police Department 2007 Summer Food Drive. Contact Victim Services’ Lukas Strout at
