Inmate Charged With Tattooing Killer

Inmate Charged With Tattooing Killer

COLUMBUS, Ind. (Oct. 29) - An inmate accused of forcibly tattooing a slain 10-year-old girl's name onto her killer's forehead in an Indiana prison was the victim's cousin, a family friend said.

Jared Harris, 22, is a cousin of Katlyn "Katie" Collman, family friend and spokesman Terry Gray confirmed to The Republic newspaper. He said he did not believe they knew each other well.

Harris, 22, who is serving time on a burglary conviction at Wabash Valley state prison in Carlisle, has been charged with battery and is accused of tattooing "KATIE'S REVENGE" across Anthony Ray Stockelman's forehead.

Harris told prison officials the attack was in revenge, according to an affidavit.

Stockelman is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to abducting, molesting and killing the fourth-grader, who lived about 70 miles south of Indianapolis. She was missing for five days before her body was found Jan. 30, 2005, in a creek about 15 miles from her home.

The affidavit said that prison officials transferred Harris to the same prison wing as Stockelman on Sept. 19, three days before the attack, and that Harris subsequently threatened Stockelman's life several times.

Harris slipped into the open cell Stockelman shared with another prisoner on Sept. 22 and, when Stockelman returned, Harris closed the locking cell door, according to the affidavit.

Stockelman told investigators that Harris put his right hand around his throat and told him, "I'm either gonna stick you and leave you bleeding or I'm gonna tattoo you." After applying the tattoo using a makeshift tattoo gun, Harris discarded the device in a trash can, he told investigators.

Missing children campaign takes to streets

Missing children campaign takes to streets
Tues Oct 31, 2006 9:39 AM GMT

LONDON (Reuters) - Pictures of missing children will be displayed on hundreds of vans as part of a national campaign to try to reunite them with their families, organisers said on Tuesday.

More than 450 vans will be used to help find children and to raise awareness of the scale of the problem.

Campaigners say a child goes missing in Britain every five minutes, a total of 100,000 each year.

The first child to be featured will be 15-year-old Sasha McLeish, from Luton, who was reported missing on June 23 after she failed to arrive at school.

Police say she may have gone to Harlesden, northwest London, where she is thought to have a teenage boyfriend.

Detective Constable Zara Carr, who is investigating her disappearance, said her family is "worried sick". Her picture will be shown on vans owned by U.S. firm Emcor and on a police-backed Web site: http://missingkids.co.uk.

Charities have used milk cartons, TV screens in taxis and pictures on delivery lorries in previous campaigns.

The Children's Society has urged the government to set up a network of refuges to help the thousands of children who run away from home each year.

One in six say they were forced to sleep rough or with strangers and one in 12 say they were harmed, the charity reported on its Web site.

Cindy Song

Halloween marks fifth year of Song tragedy
Police hope that Cindy Song's disappearance five years ago will help remind students to take safety precautions when going out to celebrate Halloween tonight.

By Jessica Turnbull
Collegian Staff Writer
While Penn State students celebrate Halloween tonight, many might not remember the girl who disappeared on the same night five years ago.

Cindy Song was 21 when she vanished on Halloween after attending parties at Players Nite Club, 112 W. College Ave., and several apartments. She was last seen, dressed as a Playboy bunny, entering her apartment at 4 a.m. Nov. 1, 2001.

Now, five years later, most students have never heard of Song or her disappearance. Police said they wish Song would serve as a reminder to students to stay safe during the holidays.

Ferguson Township police Detective Brian Sprinkle, the lead investigator on the case, said it is very important that people don't walk alone on Halloween and other nights.

Sprinkle said there have been no substantial leads in Song's Hallow een disappearance since 2003, when a Luzerne County man claimed that he and another man drove to State College to find a young girl and then killed Song and four others.

Five bodies were found on the property of Hugo Selenski, 30, who claimed he and Paul Weakley murdered the people. Though one of the bodies remains unidentified, police determined it was not Song.

"It's a case that is still active," he said.

"I don't work on it every day. But it's constantly in the back of my mind."

Ferguson Township police searched Song's West Clinton Avenue apartment Nov. 6, 2001. concluded that there were no signs of forced entry or that Song had planned to leave the area.

The Centre County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team, assisted by the Elk County search and rescue team and the Alpha Fire Co., searched Song's apartment complex with no results.

Bloodhound search dogs were also used in the area with no positive results.

Sprinkle said, as a police officer, the case is difficult because there is no crime scene or body.

"I try to be optimistic that someday we'll get an answer about what happened or, at the very least, to find her remains," he added.

Pam Centonze (junior-finance) said she had never heard of Song, but that it was important that students be aware of her disappearance to be safer.

Lacey Johnston (junior-marketing) said she knew of Song's name and her disappearance because a police officer used the story as a warning to her and her roommates to lock their doors at night.

Johnston said she lives in the same area where Song once lived but does not feel the neighborhood is unsafe. She also said that she thinks people will be continue to be safe while they are out tonight.

"I wouldn't see why [Halloween] would be any less safe than any other night," she said.

State College Mayor Bill Welch said most Penn State students do not remember Song because the core group of students living in the area when she disappeared has now left State College.

Song's disappearance was once featured on the TV shows Without a Trace, Psychic Detectives and Unsolved Mysteries, but media coverage has now come to a halt with no new progress in the case.

In 2003, police called in a Los Angeles psychic investigator to help. No new leads resulted from it.

Welch said it is important for students to be safe during Halloween, just as on every other night. "Don't drink too much," he said. "Don't wander into the street talking on your cell phone. Exercise some common sense. Don't drink until your brain falls out."

Ruth Hoffman

My Story-- by Debbie Hall

Ruth Hoffman claimed she was raped on June 30, 1986. Her daughter, Debbie, reported her mother missing the same day.

On July 29, 1986, Mom had an appointment for a job interview [at a bar] in River Rouge, Michigan. Despite the fact that she was beautiful and a gifted musician and singer it was not easy for Mom to find work. In 1983, she had been diagnosed with a chemical imbalance in the brain and placed on medication to control schizophrenia. As long as she took her medication and lived a structured life, she did quite well, but potential employers didn't always understand that.

So she was very excited about this promising new job interview that day. At 11 p.m. when she wasn't home yet, I called the bar to see if she was still there. They said she had left an hour ago. When it got to be 2 a.m. and she still wasn't home, I started calling hospitals and the local police station. I stayed up all night pacing the floor.

As she left the apartment she told me, "Those bastards won't get away with this." That was the last time I ever saw my Mom.
Bruised And Battered Victim Disappears

An artist painted this rendition of Debbie and her mother when she was a child. Debbie has few pictures of her mother and herself together.

The next morning a yellow cab pulled up in front of our apartment. When I saw my Mom was in it, I gave a huge sigh of relief. However, when she got out of the cab, I saw she was wearing hospital scrubs and was so bruised and battered that it looked like she'd been in a car wreck. She was shaking and crying hysterically and told me that she had been raped and beaten. She said the owner of the bar had promised her the job and began flirting with her. He and a friend told her "let's have some fun" and my mom told them to take their hands off of her. Then they began hitting her and knocked her down to the floor. She said they took turns raping her for hours.

After my Mom took her bath, she put her makeup on and got dressed. I asked her where she was going and she just said for a walk. As she left the apartment she told me, "Those bastards won't get away with this." That was the last time I ever saw my mom.

Determined Daughter Will Not Lose Hope

This sketch shows Ruth as she may look at age 64.

Today Mom would be 64. I'm sure wherever my Mom is she remembers only fragments of her past. But I haven't forgotten a thing.

I am my Mom's only child and her loss leaves a big black hole in my life. The last I learned of my Mom was that she received a traffic ticket on October 4, 1986, in Belleville, Michigan for making an improper turn and driving with an expired license. She was using the name "Ruth Sharon Russie." By the time we could follow up on the address of the ticket Mom was gone.

I will never stop looking for her, and, when I find her, I will make sure that somebody pays for this terrible injustice.
